what is witching hour? by pvt morgan Q: i wake up at 3 oclock EVERY mourning for some reason...so i reserched it and witching hour popped up,i got freaked out,i jsut weant a lil info on what it is

A: Midnight, as in They arrived just at the witching hour. This term alludes to older superstitions concerning a time appropriate to witchcraft and other supernatural occurrences. Shakespeare and others wrote of "the witching time of night." The precise phrase was first recorded in 1835. L8r

When is the witching hour? by Q: i always here different times of when the witching hour is like 3:15am to 4:15am, 3:33am to 4:33am, 12am to 3am, and 11am to 4am Are any of them right??

A: In European folklore, the witching hour is the time when supernatural creatures such as witches, demons and ghosts are thought to be at their most powerful, and black magic at its most effective. This hour is typically midnight, and the term may now be used to refer to midnight, or any late hour, even without having the associated superstitious beliefs. The term "witching hour" can also refer to the period from midnight to 3am, while "devils hour" refers to the time around 3am. L8r

When is "witching hour?"? by Ruby Roomer Q: I'm trying to do a book project, so I wanted to know when the original witching hour was. But I keep getting different answers from Google and Yahoo!. Anyone have any useful info? Thanks!

A: Honey, I'm a Pagan and I've hear everything from 11.00 pm to 3.00 am. I've never been totally sure. Even pagan resource books can't seem to agree.

Has anyone here read the 'The witching hour' by Ann Rice? by darkpotameides45 Q: I heard it was an AWESOME series but I don't have luck reading Ann Rice. Tried to read two books of hers before and could not bring myself to the halfway point in either of them. Have you read this book? Did you like it?

A: I've read it and liked it much better than the vampire books. I just couldn't get 'into' the vamp books, never got past about halfway in the first one. But the Witch books, i've read and enjoyed the entire series. Give them a try, you might be surprised! Best of luck

Can anyone give me more information on the 3am "The Witching Hour" saying? by Meagan Q: Thanks!

A: Well according to the movie "Exorcism of Emily Rose" 3am is supposedly the time Christ died. In historical accuracy the time of midnight or as some called midnight to 3am is the "Devil's hour." Basically when ghost, spirits, demons, etc. got to play. The phrase "witching hour" was used in variations by Shakespeare, which is probably how it got its start.

The Preschool Witching Hour? by Sheila C Q: Before bed, my daughter is off the charts. She has this WILD burst of energy then crashes. She chases and torments the dog, is mean to her brother, loud... This is the only time of day she is like this. I know it is because she is overtired. She has given up napping recently but she obviously still needs one. Any tips to get her napping again and avoid the witching hour?

A: I agree with Kristi...quiet time is a beautiful thing. My 5 year old has it on the weekends (he goes to daycare after kindergarten). The rules are: He has to be in his room for at least one hour. He has to either read, color, puzzles or something quiet. He can't come down until the big hand is on the 2 He usually falls asleep within 30 minutes. good luck

Do you think there's any real fact behind the witching hour? by darkanthias Q: I've been wondering whether my suspicions about the witching hour is properly founded.. Also I have been told 2 different times!- the old midnight and 3am. If you know which is which let me know, or perhaps both are for different things.. I have heard that different times of the day are better for doing different things, depending on where you are in the world... e.g. spellcasting

A: Midnight is supposed to be special because it is a moment between days. Personally, there's too much still happening at midnight for me to do magic, though if I were hosting a group ritual, that would be a great time for it. 3 AM is the time I feel most at peace and clear of static from people's waking minds. There's a whole complex chart of what to do when that can give your work a boost if you follow it, but I'm a pragmatic Witch - I do what I need to do where I am with what I have.

exactly what does the phrase "the witching hour" mean? by Q: i have heard this phrase but im not sure what the meaning is. and ive heard it has something to do with after midnight??

A: The witching hour is midnight, the time when witches and ghosts and skeletons and such supposedly appear from graveyards. They disappear again at dawn.

What is the witching hour? by Q: Ive read lots of different things about the witching hour. Does it have anything to do with Black Magick ? I know magick is neither black nor white but I dont want to do anything that might be classed as black magick. I am Wiccan and for casting spells etc would it be ok to do this during the witching hour ?

A: "The Witching hour" is Christian mythology. It's so very sad to see alleged Wiccans buy into it.

The Witching Hour by Anne Rice? by M A R Q: Has anyone read The Witching Hour by Ann Rice? Is it any good... I just got it, but am not sure if I should read it. Its a big book and I don't want to read it and then realize its not worth the time it takes to read....Any comments on it?

A: not my sort of book but there are a lot of teenage girls on here raviong over this book and the series that it starts (the mayfair witches) - so if you like teeny spooky stories go ahead and read it -anyway what have you got to lose - if you dont like it you can always stop reading it

''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''ñññññññññññññññññññññ THE witching hour is that night time period often associated with a surge in paranormal activities and happenings. It’s when ‘things go bump in the night’. The witching hour, in European and Christian folklore is a time when evil and evil-doers in the form of demons and witches are at their most powerful. People also believe that it’s a time when black magic and malcontents are at their evil best. The witching hour is generally thought to be from midnight to 3am and the period is also referred to in some Christian traditions as the ‘devil’s hour’. The 3am time is the opposite of 3pm, the generally accepted time of death of Jesus. Love

Do you think the book "The Witching Hour" should be made into a movie? by miss_si6ks Q: Or do you think that the book is too long, and has way to much detail in it to be made into a good movie?

A: It would be a horrible movie. Maybe an HBO series or something might work. That would allow the time needed to cover everything and allow for an R rating.

When Is The True Witching Hour? by Q: I dont know why, but i have always wanted to know when this is. Please help and be a LITTLE serious.

A: In medieval times the witching hour was when locals believed witches we're their strongest and most likely to be worshiping the devil. If you were in western europe at the time, the witching hour was generally considered to be midnight. Of course they didn't have clocks back then.. which is why in some countries the witching hour was actually at 3 am, or when it was believed the veil between our world and the spirit world was at its thinnest. The witching hours is also called the dead of night. Contrary to popular belief, no they didn't go out and hunt witches at midnight. Most locals were too scared of highway men and superstitious of the devil and demonic spirits. Back before electricity and modern lighting, when the sun went down you generally stayed at home and locked the door, to put it lightly.

Is the witching hour true or false? by Q: I say it's false. What would you say?

A: Why do you say it's false? What do you believe "The Witching Hour" means? It is believed that certain times of night are best to work magical crafts or odd occurances happen...some believe this time to be between the hours of midnight and 3 am. It's not a mystical time of night, nor some hush-hush top secret that must be hidden from all. Everyone knows already about midnight and 3 am, therefore they exist regardless. It's perhaps coincidence that these things happen at these specific times. If you don't believe in certain magical crafts than that's your opinion, just because you don't believe doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't exist. I can say I don't believe you exist, because it's just words on a screen that could have been written by a computer, but nonetheless you could actually exist.

When does the "witching hour" commence in your home? by T-Mama Q: All parents should know what I mean by that. So, when does it happen in your house? In ours it's around 5 pm. Close to dinner. Tired. Cranky. And the kids are going nuts :)

A: Right before bedtime...but it is usually me going nuts. It is about the time of day when I have reached my limit. I try to stay calm...but the whole family knows I'm cooked.

It made me wonder. Who is she? Which witch? Sorry I couldnt find a larger image. (:

A: I remember that book. My cover was green. Mary Beth? One of those other witches in the flashbacks? I forget their names.

Why is 3:00 am considered the "witching hour"? by Q: And what does "witching hour" mean?

A: What Does Witching Hour Mean? In folklore, it is supposed to be midnight, when supernatural events occur... But some think it is 3 am - because it is 'the devil's time' as Jesus was crucified at 3 pm. The term was invented by the author Washington Irvine in this work " Sleepy Hollow"- where it references midnight. This term was used interchangeably with the phrase "witching time" and may have originated in the area where Irvine grew up - close to Salem. In investment, witching hour is a technical term. It is The last hour of stock trading between 3pm (when the bond market closes) and 4pm EST. Witching hour is typically controlled by large professional traders, program traders and large institutional traders, and can be characterized by higher-than-average volatility. The witching hour is most commonly known in the context of triple witching, which is the third Friday of every quarter, when stock index options, stock options and stock index futures expire and roll to the next series. The last hour of these Fridays can be very volatile as positions are adjusted or closed out in anticipation of expiration. Since single stock index options now expire on the same day, triple witching and quadruple witching are used somewhat interchangeably.

where did the belief that 3 am was the witching hour come from? by ☮ ♥Bella ☮ ♥ Q: And what exactly does that even mean? my grandmother would freak out anytime i was awake at this time; but i never understood why. Then when i got to college a classmate said the 3am was the 'devil's hour"; but she didn't explain why people think that. any help would be nice

A: Well to pagans/Wiccans/witches the number 3 is the sacred number because of the 3 by 3 law and the triple goddess 3 is very sacred and 3 am is the witching hour because that's when the moon and sun is at the peek point its when the power is at the most it's when the paranormal world and the material world collide. I hope i explained that well enough. Oh yeah and it's called the devils hour too because it's said to be the point where all portals open when the two worlds are aliened and it's when the demons are able to wonder without anything holding them back but that's just the superstition. Im a pagan

Why is 3 am called the "witching hour"? by beautifulmind Q: I have had 2 pretty frigtening experiences at 3:30 am the last couple of weeks. I am trying to find spiritual meaning in them. Can anyone else tell me about the "witching hour" or share any similar experiences? Feel free to email if you need more privacy. Thanks.

A: Midnight is the witching hour, 3:00 is considered "Dead Time" when the veil between the living and the dead is thinner and our plane of existence can be more easily effected by those who have died. It also is considered a time when most negative magic takes place, as well as most/many prophetic or magically induced dreams. Edited to add and also for spelling.

Has anyone read The Witching Hour by Anne Rice? by corby_edouard Q: Is it good? Worth reading? What are your thoughts on it?

A: If you like dark, sensual, supernatural, gothic stories then this book is definitely for you. It chronicles the story of a line of powerful witches dating back to the Middle Ages in the Scottish Highlands and ending in Anne Rice's favourite city of New Orleans. It pushes a few moral boundaries, but it will absorb you and leave you thirsting for more.. which is good because she wrote two books which continue the story, Lasher and Taltos. If you really go Anne Rice crazy the witches appear in the pages of her Vampire novels later in the series. I also highly recommend the Vampire chronicles as well.

What time is the witching hour? by dark_hellbent_king Q: Is energy the strongest on a full moon during the witching hour?

A: In European folklore, the witching hour is the time when supernatural creatures such as witches, demons and ghosts are thought to be at their most powerful, and black magic at its most effective. This hour is typically midnight, and the term may now be used to refer to midnight, or any late hour, even without having the associated superstitious beliefs. In neopaganism, it is sometimes used to refer solely to midnights occurring during a full moon, when a witch's power is supposedly at its greatest. In Gypsy beliefs the "Witching Hour" is actually at 1 o'clock as opposed to midnight because it is the "Thirteenth Hour".

When is, and what happens during the witching hour? by As it should be Q:

A: In Washington Irving's short story 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' witching hour and witching time both refer to midnight. In several of Shakespeare's plays - specifically 'Macbeth' and 'Julius Caesar', there is no mention of the term witching hour, but ghosts and other supernatural phenomena are said to take place around midnight. According to the American horror film 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose', the term can also refer to the period from midnight and 3am Witching hour is said to be the time when supernatural creatures such as witches, demons and ghosts are thought to appear and be at their most powerful, and black magic at its most effective.

Where did the phrase "the witching hour" originate? by mandiimo aka: amanda Q: Just curious, the phrase popped in my head last night and I was wondering where it started and what it meant?

A: In European folklore, the witching hour is the time when supernatural creatures such as witches, demons and ghosts are thought to be at their most powerful, and black magic at its most effective. What does it mean when you wake up two days in a row during the witching hour and on the third day you see a b? by Q: Black crow

A: It means you have very good night vision.

Where did people get the idea that 3am was the witching hour? by Ting Q: The 1st time I heard of it was in the Exorcism of Emily Rose. What is it's origin?

A: 12 am is typically considered to be the "witching" hour due to the veils being the thinnest at that time in a 24 hour period. Midnite is also a doorway between time. It is neither today or tomorrow. Doorways are considered to be places of magic. Standing in a doorway, you are neither in nor are you out...you are between. The number 3 is a holy number because 3 represents the triple aspect of the Divine. Maiden, Mother, Crone in the Pagan religion and Father, Son and Holy Ghost in the Christian religion. It is widely accepted that Christ died on the cross at 3 pm and is the holy hour. Therefore, 3 am would be its opposite and would be considered the demonic hour. A kind of mockery of Christ's crucifixion according to Satanic thoughts.

Why would Obama send the text message at the "witching hour"? by Dr. Fell Q: 3 AM is the witching hour. 24 hours in the day and he picks the witching hour. Wierd. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witching_hour 3 AM has always been the witching hour. Research it!

Why do people call a certain time at a night (the witching hour)? by Q: and what time exactly is (the witching hour)? its 12 isnt it?

A: The "witching hour" is the time of night when supernatural activity is supposed to occur and Black Magic is at its most potent levels. There is no set "hour" as the term is used to describe the "spooky" feeling you get in a quiet night but often it refers to 12 midnight

Is there a difference between the witching hour and the demon hour? by Q: ...... witching hour is 3:00 am guys... im wondering if theres a difference between what is called witching and demon hour ghosts are more active between 2 and 4 am

A: Jne,not that I am aware of.I have always heard that any where from 12:00 midnight on is known as dead time.I had an experience at 3:00 am in the morning. This seems to be the most active time for spirits and any paranormal activity during these hours. Tomb Raider

Has anyone read The Witching Hour series by Anne Rice? by Pathfinder Q: It also includes Lasher and Taltos. I really liked it and cannot believe it hasn't been picked up for a movie. Did you enjoy it?

A: Cool, a movie? I agree that the series is lengthy, and the way the industry sorta smashed "Queen of the Damned" in with "Vampire Lestat" I wonder how good of one it will be. But there are some very interesting mythos' and imagery in the series that I would love to see the right director explore... The ancient bargain between Lasher and the witches; The vastly unexplored (at least by Hollywood) Talamasca; The concept of a surgeon who can kill with her mind... Fantastic ideas. Looking forward to it.

Is there really a witching hour? by danielleedison06 Q: I have heard that at 3 am it is the witching hour because demons or spirits are mocking the death of Jesus Christ which was at 3 pm. Could someone explain what witching hour is and possibly the difference between that and "dead time"?

A: 3 am (the dead of night or dead time) is the correct hour that it is believed spirit activity is suppose to be at its peak. One theory is that at night electromagnetism in the atmosphere changes such that the boundry between our normal world and what some reffer to as the "otherworld" is at its thinest. This allows entities from this otherworld to cross over into our world more easily. In religions like wicca and christianity, the time of 3 is important because it reflects the holy trinity. In wicca 3 am is considered important because its correlation to the 3 fold law and the 3 fold Goddess. In Christianity the trinity relates to father, son, holy ghost - and the alledged death of Jesus. However the bible does not say Jesus died at 3 pm, that is a modern invention. In the days of Jesus, they did not even measure time the same way we do. The witching hour from medieval times is the time believed that witches came out to do their "unholy satanic" practices. The time ascribed to the witching hour was generally viewed at mid-night. Women caught out late at night could have been suspected of witchcraft if they did not have a legitimate reason to be out. In some countries it was illegal for women to be out past dark.

What time is the ORIGINAL witching hour? by Q: Some say 3am and others say midnight. Which time is the original witching hour?

A: Don't know for sure but I can tell you this, when my aunt used to study witchcraft, she would choose after midnight when she would put spells on ppl.

Why is 3 AM considered the witching hour? by Q: I first heard about the witching hour in church when I was about 12 or 13. I had never heard about it before that. I have stayed up past 3 AM too many nights to count, and nothing has ever happened to me. Please, someone explain this to me! Am I missing something?

A: the witching hour is sometime past midnight or the middle of the night. It is called this because it was believed witches, ghosts, and demons would be at their most powerful. This was probably because this is when it is darkest and darkness has been associated with evil. It doesn't mean if you stay up ghosts will come and get you. It's just an old belief carrried over from pagan religions.

What exactly is the witching hour? by Q: I saw the question that asked when the witching hour was, but exactly is it? Where did it come and what is it used for?

A: The answer is both simpler and changable as the current fad. If you look back within history, numbered clocks are rather new. The period that is now known as the Witching Hour is that hour right between sun down and sun up. The darkest time of the night. That hour changes every night of the year as the days and nights become longer and shorter. (Mid) night only takes place twice a year. There is a big difference between Folktales and Folklore. A quote "They came in the darkest of the night to take the Witches and the Heretics to the inqisitors." ---- So began the "Witching Hour." Edit: Just an aside. The majority of material on spells agrees spells should be crafted then used beneath a waxing moon. The waxing moon has nothing to do with midnight or 3:00 a.m. and the moon isn't even up during those times on many occaisons.

where does the term the witching hour come from and its meaning? by hard_fossile Q: Where does the term "The Witching Hour" come from and it's original meaning?
